Dramaturgo irlandés. Después de estudiar en Irlanda y de viajar por Europa, se estableció en París en 1937. Durante la segunda guerra mundial se ganó la vida como jornalero en el campo y posteriormente se unió a la resistencia. En los años de posguerra escribió, en francés, la trilogía narrativa

Esperando a Godot (1952) fue un éxito inmediato en París, y con su traducción al inglés, fue aclamada en todo el mundo. Se distingue por su trama y acción mínima, su humor e ideas existencialistas, y es una pieza representativa del
teatro del absurdo. Entre sus trabajos abstractos posteriores, escasamente representados, que abordan el misterio y la desesperación de la existencia humana se cuentan
